Welcome to Conference and Opening Remarks

Lindsay Milton is a practice owner and principal of a predominantly NHS practice in the south side of Glasgow. He has been a VT Trainer for many years and is a Practice Inspector for Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. He also works for NHS 24 and undertakes a variety of roles for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses. He has been a member of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Local Dental Committee since 2014 and is currently Chair of the Conference Agenda Committee and Conference of Scottish LDCs.

Gerard Boyle, Senior Dental Adviser, Practitioner Services
An Update from Practitioner Services

Gerard Boyle is the Senior Dental Adviser at NSS Practitioner Services, managing a clinical team of 12, comprised of Dental Advisers and Dental Reference Officers. He was in general dental practice for 30 years and served on SDPC and Greater Glasgow & Clyde LDC, the latter in the roles of Chair and Secretary. In addition, Gerard was Dental Practice Adviser for NHS Forth Valley and a practice inspector with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde for several years. He also spent over 10 years with FGDP Scotland as a tutor and Divisional Treasurer.

David McColl

David McColl, Chair of the Scottish Dental Practice Committee
The work of the Scottish Dental Practice Committee 2022-2023

David McColl is the Chair of the Scottish Dental Practice Committee (SDPC) and Vice Chair of the GP Sub-committee of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Local Dental Committee. He also sits on the Area Dental Committee of Greater Glasgow and Clyde LDC and is on the Board of the Scottish Public Pensions Authority (SPPA).

Jenni Minto

Ms Jenni Minto, Minister of Public Health and Women’s Health
Update from the Scottish Government

Jenni was born in Elgin and brought up in St Andrews, she returned to the north east
to study accountancy at Aberdeen University and then qualified as a Chartered
Accountant. Following this she moved to Glasgow to work at BBC Scotland working
in many different programme areas over 18 years including helping to establish BBC
Alba.

Jenni has since moved to Islay, where she volunteered for charities including the
Islay Energy Trust, playing a key role in establishing a community wind turbine on
the island; and worked as manager of the Museum of Islay Life. Jenni chaired WW1
commemorations on Islay in 2018, which included over 40 events involving all
elements of the community.

As MSP for Argyll and Bute, Jenni has contributed to three parliamentary committees and held membership on 15 cross party groups. Her campaign for the removal of VAT from defibrillators received cross-party support in the Scottish Parliament.

Sandesh Gulhane

Dr Sandesh Gulhane, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
The Future of Dentistry in Scotland

Sandesh Gulhane is a GP and politician who was elected Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Glasgow Region in May 2021, the first Hindu and first man of Indian descent to be elected MSP. He currently serves as the Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. Sandesh was educated in London, studied at Imperial College and has been a doctor since 2006. He worked as an orthopaedic registrar in London, Birmingham, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Glasgow before changing focus to primary care in 2015.

Sandesh was also Club Doctor as part of the medical staff of Scottish Professional Football League Club Queen’s Park FC from 2017 until August 2021, utilising his interest in Sports Medicine, working with players and non- playing staff alike.

He continues to work one day per week as an NHS GP.

As MSP, Sandesh has lobbied government for funding to support Long Covid sufferers and continues to challenge the government on its Covid Recovery programme for NHS Scotland, including hospital waiting times, resourcing primary care and mental health services.

Liz Glass

Elizabeth Glass, Conference Treasurer
Conference Accounts and Treasurer’s Report

Elizabeth Glass, known as Liz, qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1986. She has been a committee member of Greater Glasgow and Clyde Local Dental Committee since the late 1980s and has attended all Scottish LDC Conferences since their inception in 1999 following Devolution. Liz chaired the Scottish LDC Conference in 2008 and 2009 and has served as Treasurer since 2011, taking over from Frank Angell on his retirement from dental politics. In 2020 she modernised the operation of the Conference bank account, moving to online banking, with the facility for all payments to be counter-authorised by Chair or Chair-Elected, as laid down in standing orders.
